I started with Mom's recipe and modified it over the 25 years of my marriage. Also I learned a method of rolling the "pigs" from one of Martha Stewart's books.

Sweet Potato & Pear Soup

Sweet Potato & Pear Soup

This is a delicious soup with a truly different taste and texture from any other soups I have eaten or made. It is nutritious and healthy for day-to-day eating and is also ideal for dinner parties. Be ready to be asked for the recipe! It reheats well, including in the microwave, and makes a great lunch to take to work. It also freezes well, so it's worth making a large quantity when you make it, so that you have some to freeze. Like most soup recipes it is easy to modify to suit your personal preferences. I first came across the basic recipe in two different Murdoch Books publications: Entertaining: Quick Short Recipes and Bowl Food: the new comfort food for people on the move. The first time I made it, the fresh pears at the greengrocers were not yet ripe and I was impatient to try the recipe! So I used canned pears (minus the pear juice, some of which I drank while making the soup). Because the soup was so delicious using the canned pears, I have continued to use them each time I have made this soup. As a garlic lover, I have so far refrained from adding garlic but with winter approaching - for those of us who are down under - I intend to add some next time I make this soup.

Sharbat (Orange Ice)

A wonderfully refreshing drink popular throughout the Middle East. This particular version of it is from Iran, and is from the Bay Books' publication: 'The Best of Lebanese and Middle Eastern Cooking'. It is impossible to provide "accurate" freezing times for this recipe, as it's really up to you - and also of course to the efficiency of your fridge - just how many times you repeat step 4. When I've made this, I've repeated this step three times, so that's what I've calculated into the "cooking time". For this recipe "cooking time" = freezing time. This is, therefore, obviously a prepare-ahead drink/dessert, and one which is ideally made when you are in the kitchen preparing other dishes. I'm posting it for the 2005 Zaar World Tour. Orange-blossom water can be purchased from Middle Eastern grocery stores. I'd recommend making this Sharbat with fresh oranges and lemons, and with natural spring water or filtered water. And to use more or less sugar, to satisfy your taste preferences.

Chicken Kabuli (Murgh Kabuli)

Chicken Kabuli (Murgh Kabuli)

This mild and flavourful dish comes from Julie Sahni's 1980 book, Classic Indian Cookery. She adapted it from a dish served at the Akbar India Restaurant in New York City (which I think is now closed). I am posting this for some former exchange students who are going through severe Kabuli withdrawal. I often make this a day in advance. A few comments. I think Julie Sahni writes some of the clearest recipes on the planet — and she does so without being patronising. Check out her books (and note that I have abbreviated some instructions slightly). Also, I wonder if Kabuli means the recipe is influenced by dishes from Kabul, Afghanistan. Finally, I have never timed this accurately, so the prep time is a bit of a guess.

Jarlsberg Oven Omelet

Found this recipe in the Food Section in the Chronicle newspaper quite awhile ago. This dish is supposedly adapted from "Omelettes, Souffles & Frittatas", (Chronicle Books 1999). NOTE: I always make this omelet with Ham instead of Proscuitto, and always, always use Gruyere cheese. Very easy dish to prepare, and tastes wonderful.
